Overview
WriteTrace is a Google Docs writing process replay and analysis tool. It is designed with privacy as a core principle: all document analysis happens entirely in your browser. Document content and revision data never leave your device.
Data We Collect
We collect the absolute minimum data required to operate the extension:
- License Key: When you activate a paid license, your license key is sent to our verification server to validate your subscription status.
- Email Address: The email address associated with your license purchase, used solely for license management and support communication.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect, store, or transmit any Google Docs content or revision data.
- We do not collect your browsing history or browsing activity.
- We do not use any analytics or tracking services.
- We do not collect any personally identifiable information beyond what is listed above.
- We do not sell, rent, or share any user data with third parties.
Data Storage
All data generated by the extension is stored locally on your device using browser-native storage technologies:
- chrome.storage.local for extension settings, license status, and usage counters.
Document revision data is processed in memory during replay and is not persisted after the browser tab is closed. This data never leaves your browser.
Google Docs Access
WriteTrace accesses Google Docs revision history through the same internal API that powers Google's built-in "Version history" feature. This access uses your existing Google authentication session — WriteTrace does not request or store your Google credentials.
The extension only activates on Google Docs pages (docs.google.com). It does not run on or access any other websites.
License Verification
When you enter a license key, the extension sends a request to our verification server containing:
- Your license key
- The product identifier (
writetrace)
No document content, revision data, browsing data, or other personal information is included in this request.
Screenshot Capture
The Pro "Evidence Summary" feature captures a screenshot of the current browser tab to include in the evidence PNG. This screenshot is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to any server. The resulting PNG file is saved directly to your device.
Third-Party Services
- Stripe is used to process payments for Pro plans. Payment information is handled entirely by Stripe and is never stored on our servers. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
Permissions
The extension requests only the permissions necessary for its core functionality:
- activeTab: To access the current Google Docs tab for revision analysis and screenshot capture.
- storage: To save your preferences and license status locally.
- alarms: To schedule periodic license verification checks.
- Host permission (docs.google.com): To detect and interact with Google Docs pages.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
